GOJHL Regular Season in Full Swing this Weekend

The 2023-24 season is underway and after three games in two nights, the schedule ramps up with a total of 18 games this weekend. The offseason was full of anticipation for what is shaping up to be an entertaining and competitive year.

“I’m excited for the season to begin and I’m confident we will pick up where we left off in May, with an exciting brand of hockey. We have a new ownership group and some new coaches and general managers across the league that I’m looking forward to working closely with. As interim commissioner, my passion for hockey and experience will be utilized for further development of the GOJHL and our players,” said Tim Simmons.

The 2023-24 season sees the return of teams playing three out-of-conference games, something the league feels will be of interest to everyone involved. “I know the teams are looking forward to it and I think the fans will enjoy seeing unfamiliar teams come to town,” added Simmons.

The league is well-known for helping players reach the next level of their games and as a result, a next level of hockey. Simmons said that won’t change this season. “The great thing about the GOJHL is that we develop players for different levels of hockey. Our teams send players to the OHL, USHL, NCAA, and U Sports. Having two players drafted in the first round of the NHL draft only one year removed from the GOJHL is a great accomplishment for the players and the staff who furthered their skillsets.”

One of the biggest reasons behind the success of the league is the faces that are seen every single game day at arenas across the league, something not lost on Simmons. “The GOJHL has some of the best fans in Jr. Hockey and the teams appreciate the support at home and on the road, these teams wouldn’t be the same without the local support. I would like to thank all the volunteers who take time out of their own schedules to help run these teams, they couldn’t operate without your help.”

The league’s annual Showcase event is also just one week away and will be well-attended by fans and scouts alike. Simmons said it will also be an opportunity for Elmira and the Sugar Kings to impress. “Not only do they have an outstanding organization but the community itself has so much to offer off the ice. I’m confident that teams and fans will enjoy the total experience.”
