With his two points in last night’s win over the St. Marys Lincolns and with 11 regular-season games still to play, Abdul Abouzeeni has already produced the second highest scoring season by a defenseman in LaSalle Vipers history. His 42 points through 38 games played are the most since David Sharpe’s franchise-record 68 points established back in the 2009-2010 season.
In his third season with the team, the Windsor native is carving out a position as one of the all-time great defensemen in the history of the LaSalle Vipers franchise. He currently ranks third in the Western Conference in points by a defenseman with 42 and is second in goals with 12, and with his outstanding play at both ends of the ice, he has made a strong case at being one of the most valuable players to his team in the league.
Last season he was the winner of the team’s Defensive Player of the Year award and was then chosen to be an assistant captain, where he leads by example through high character and impeccable on and off-ice work-ethic. Currently with 86 career points, he will soon pass Sharpe to become the franchise’s leader in that category among defenseman.
With another year of junior hockey eligibility remaining, there is plenty of opportunity for Abouzeeni to move further up the ranks and etch his name among the all-time great Vipers at any position, not just defensemen.
