Canadians rally for second overtime win of weekend; grab 8th spot in Eastern Conference

Braden Carruthers tied the game with 2:47 left in the third period and Christiano Stogiannis scored the winner against his former team 52 seconds into overtime (video) as the Canadians overcame a 3-1 third period deficit to earn their second dramatic OT win in consecutive nights. Jack Ryan scored his 50th and 51st career GOJHL goals for Welland (9-15-1-0) who moved into eighth place in the Eastern Conference. With the single point from the OT loss, the Sailors (14-8-2-1) extended their points streak to four games (3-0-1-0) and moved into sole possession of fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

Brendan Gerber scored three goals for his second career GOJHL hat-trick and Nathan Schaap scored two goals as the eighth place Rockets (13-8-1-1) ended their three-game losing streak to stay three points ahead of the ninth place K-W Siskins in the Western Conference standings. The Kings (4-19-1-0) have now lost four straight overall and have lost each of their last eight meetings against the Rockets.

Nolan Chartrand (W, 4-6-1) made 47 saves for his first win since October 13th (also against Chatham) as the Siskins (10-8-3-2) extended their points streak to four games (3-0-1-0) to remain three points back of eighth place Strathroy in the Western Conference. The Maroons (14-8-2-0) are winless in their last three home games (0-2-1-0) and dropped to sixth place in the Western Conference after Elmira’s win over St. Thomas on Sunday.

Joey Martin and Jimmy Sutherland each scored two goals as the Sugar Kings (14-9-3-0) rode a five-goal first period to their fourth straight home win and a share of fourth place in the Western Conference. Combined with Saturday’s 11-2 win over Sarnia, the Sugar Kings scored a combined 18 goals in their two weekend wins. The Stars (6-14-2-1) suffered their fifth straight road loss and are winless in three meetings against Elmira this season (0-2-1-0).
