First-place London Nationals extend perfect start by thumping Chatham Maroons

CHATHAM – The Chatham Maroons’ season-opening point streak ended with a thud Sunday.

The London Nationals spoiled the Maroons’ home opener with five second-period goals in a 7-1 win before a crowd of 752 at Chatham Memorial Arena.

The Maroons’ regulation loss was their first in four games.

Zach Power scored on a power play 50 seconds into the third period to spoil Nationals goalie Bryce Walcarius’s shutout bid.

Maroons starting goalie Noah Zeppa was pulled midway through the second period after allowing four goals on 23 shots.

Tiago Rocha gave up three more goals on 24 shots.

Defenceman Blake Petterle, 19, made his Maroons debut after being acquired from the Waterloo Siskins. The native of Grosse Ile, Mich., had 12 points and 48 penalty minutes in 45 games last season for the Sutherland Cup champions.

Cal Davis had a hat trick and Cohen Kitely scored twice for the Nationals, who lead the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Western Conference with a 4-0-0-0 record.

Michael McKnight and Max Vinogradov also scored. Walcarius made 34 saves
