Announcing the 2021-22 GOJHL Midwestern Conference Awards

Midwestern Conference Awards

May 1st, 2022 – The Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL) today recognizes the Midwestern Conference major award winners for the 2021-22 regular season.

The Unique Cup winner for 2021-22 as Midwestern Conference Leading Scorer is Zac McCann of the Stratford Warriors. The captain of the Warriors topped the midwest with 60 points this season including 28 goals and 32 assists this season.

The Leroy Jamieson Memorial Award for Outstanding Contribution to One Team goes to Jaden Goldie of the Listowel Cyclones. Goldie had an even split in his points totals this season with 26 goals and 26 assists for 52 points. It’s a big jump from his totals in 2019-20 when he had 15 points in 50 games. He was also a threat on the powerplay this year with 6 goals for the Cyclones.

The Standard Life Insurance Award for Sportsmanship and Outstanding Ability goes to Tyson Hillier from the KW Siskins. The Waterloo, ON native did a bit of everything for the Siskins this season, he had 20 goals and 28 assists while netting 5 game winning goals and 5 powerplay goal. Hillier only saw the penalty box for 24 minutes on the campaign.

The Twin Cities Trophies Award as Best Team Goaltending goes to the Elmira Sugar Kings combo of Matthew Lunghi & Daniel Botelho. The Sugar Kings duo lived was extremely impressive as they split the action fairly evenly. Botelho had 26 appearances this season with a 19-6-1-0 record recording a 2.13 GAA and .917 SV%, including 3 shutouts. Lunghi posted a 14-4-0-0 record with a 1.98 GAA & .920 SV%, assing 4 shutouts of his own.

The Kearnsy Memorial Award as Coach of the Year will also go to Rob Collins, Head Coach of the Elmira Sugar Kings. The Midwestern Conference’s top team this season had 35 wins and 72 total points. Collins and his staff kept their squad motivated all season long and finished 4th league-wide in goal differential with a +67.

The Joe Veroni Memorial Award for Defensive Forward of the Year is Kurtis Goodwin of the Elmira Sugar Kings. Some might call him “Mr. Consistent” in the Sugar Kings lineup. Each of the last three seasons he has had 26, 26 & 28 points. He contributes in all facets of the game with 3 powerplay goals, a shorthanded goal, and 2 game-winners on his stat line this season.

The R.J. Noble Memorial Award as Rookie of the Year is also going to the Elmira Sugar Kings Jaxson Murray. The 2003 born forward was only a point off the team lead in 2021-22 with 22 goals & 28 assists for 50 points. The Waterloo native made an impact in his first full season in the GOJHL and was named to the Top Prospects Roster this season. 6 of the Sugar Kings games this season were finished by a Murray game-winner.

The Cory Stoyko Memorial Award as Defenceman of the Year is Derek Pys of the Cambridge Redhawks. While he defends his own end with authority, the 6’1 left-handed defender, he also bring an offensive flare to the Redhawks lineup. He is just over a point per game this season with 9 goals and 32 assists in 40 games. He is a smart defender as well who avoided the penalty box with only 10 PIMs on the season.

And finally, the CKCO TV Award as Midwestern Conference MVP goes to Zac McCann of the Stratford Warriors. McCann did a little bit of everything for the Warriors this season and was a consistent threat to the opposition. On top of the previously mentioned 60 points that included 7 game-winners, 7 powerplay goals, and only 8 penalty minutes.
