Elmira Sugar Kings Jake Weidner Accepts Scholarship to Cornell University Next Fall
Elmira Sugar Kings Junior Hockey Club wish to formally announce that 20 year old Centre- Jake Weidner has been committed to 4 year Division 1 scholarship in the ECAC Conference with Cornell University Hockey Big Red Hockey beginning the 2013-14 season.
Jake was recruited by Cornell’s Associate Head Coach Ben Syer; Ben is well known throughout NCAA circles as one of the top college hockey recruiters in the nation. Ben scouted and evaluated Jake extensively when a recruiting trip brought him to Elmira in mid December to see the Sugar Kings crafty 6’2 Centre. Jake was highly sought after by as many as five other top NCAA Division 1 schools throughout the season; however Cornell became his ultimate first choice after his official visit to Cornell’s Ithaca, New York campus and athletic facilities in late January.
Jake will be joining one of the NCAA's elite hockey programs in which the Big Red are ranked #4 in the country. Cornell is also one of the most elite Ivy league academic schools in the world. The Big Red hockey program has graduated players to pro hockey such as NHL’ers Joe Nieuwendyk, Matt Moulson, Ben Scrivens, Ryan O’Byrne, Kent Manderville and Ken Dryden.
Jake recently returned from his official visit in Ithaca, New York to meet with 18 year Head Coach Mike Shaefer, Associate Coaches Ben Syer, and Topher Scott where Jake will sign his National Letter of Intent in April at the NCAA National Signing.
The Elmira Sugar Kings organization has now developed 15 players to NCAA, OHL, OUA-CIS in the last 3 seasons.
Overall, after 42 years in operation, the Sugar Kings organization represents some of the finest hockey development in junior hockey, the Mid Western Conference and the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey Leagu.
